Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

It’s completely natural to have questions—especially when you’re considering something as personal and powerful as working with the subconscious mind for inner healing. Whether you’re brand new to this work or simply exploring, the answers below are here to offer clarity, reassurance, and a deeper understanding of how hypnotherapy  can gently support your unique journey.

Is hypnosis real?

Yes, hypnosis is very real—and it’s a natural state that most of us experience during our everyday life without even realizing it. That deeply focused, inward-feeling you get while watching a movie, driving on autopilot, or getting lost in thought? That’s a form of hypnosis. In a hypnotherapy session, I will guide you into that same kind of focus with intention, using it as a powerful tool for healing and change. It's well-supported by decades of scientific research. Studies using EEGs and brain imaging have shown measurable changes in brain activity during hypnosis, especially in areas related to attention, perception, and suggestibility and hypnosis is used in clinical settings around the world to manage pain, reduce anxiety, support behavioral change, and more.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle, highly beneficial process that combines intentional protocols with hypnosis to access the subconscious mind—where habits, beliefs, and emotional patterns are stored. In this state of deep inner awareness, you're more open to positive suggestions and healing insights that can support real, lasting change. My advanced hypnotherapy training includes hypnotic programming, age regression, breathwork, parts work facilitation, eye movement facilitation work, NLP, past life regression, natal and womb regression and meditation.

Will I lose control, be unconscious or be forced to see something I don't want to see during hypnosis?

No—you remain in full control at all times. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused awareness, similar to daydreaming or the feeling of when you are deeply engaged in watching a movie. You are aware of your surroundings, and you can speak, move, or even open your eyes if you choose. During hypnosis, you remain completely aware and in control. It's not possible for you to do or say something you wouldn't want to do or say. You can end the session at any time, simply by choosing to do so. Hypnosis is not about giving up control-- it's the exact opposite, your awareness increases as you open the door to your inner world while staying fully conscious. Your subconscious mind is very protective of you. That means you won’t encounter anything you're not ready to face, nor will you reveal anything you don't truly want to share. Hypnosis isn’t a truth serum; it’s a collaborative process. Even in a deeply relaxed state, you can still choose what to express (or not) and how. At every moment, your subconscious mind is working to keep you safe. Its highest priority is your well-being, and in hypnotherapy, that guiding instinct is always honored and respected.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

It's common for us to enter into a state of hypnosis when we watch a movie for example, read a book, drive a car without remembering that we passed certain landmarks, or daydream as we wait in line. Someone can call our name and we don't hear them. The rest of the world disappears from our awareness. Our eyes are open and we are in a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis in various forms is something which we experience throughout the day, depending on what we are doing. You've done this thousands of times and this is why hypnotherapists say that anyone who wants to be hypnotized can be. An outside force isn't causing you to do this. It’s just you, using your mind in a different way, allowing yourself to get into a different state of awareness. It's easy to see why all hypnosis is considered self-hypnosis.

Will I remember the session?

Quite often, people are aware of everything that happens during hypnosis and are able to recall the entire experience. Similar to the state of daydreaming, it’s also common for awareness to fade in and out during the experience. Most people remember the details of their experience just like they remember a conversation from yesterday.

Do I have to be experienced at hyposis in order for it to be effective?

There is no right or wrong way for you to experience hypnosis. As the client, you simply need to be willing to participate and receive the benefits of working with an educated and highly trained certified Clinical Hypnotherapist like Kim who is skilled at guiding you into the hypnotic state so that you achieve your goals.

What does it feel like to be in hypnosis?

Most clients describe it as being deeply relaxing and peaceful. Many clients say that they've never been more relaxed in their life and that hypnosis brings them tremendous clarity about their issues.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the issue and your goals. Some clients experience significant relief in just one or two sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over several months. I generally recommend at least 3 to 5 sessions to get the most out of it that you can. Your readiness to change and commitment to the process significantly influences the number of required sessions. The more engaged you are in the process, the quicker you're likely to see results.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes, hypnotherapy is a safe and gentle practice when done by a trained professional. It’s recognized by many medical and psychological associations as an effective complementary approach to healing and personal growth. I graduated with straight A's from one of the top hypnotherapy schools in the country, one of only a handful that offers 500 hours of state-licensed education. I am certified by the IAIH, a governing body with one of the highest standards in the hypnotherapy industry, requiring at least 500 hours of hypnotherapy training and 30 hours of continuing education biannually for membership.

What’s the difference between hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis?

Stage hypnosis is entertainment and uses volunteers who want to participate for the purposes of amusement and spectacle. Hypnotherapy, by contrast, is a set of science-based healing techniques; it's respectful, confidential, and focused entirely on your wellbeing.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, you can’t get stuck. Even in the deepest levels of relaxation, you could easily return to full waking awareness on your own if needed. Most people emerge from hypnosis feeling refreshed and clear, as if they've taken a wonderful nap. And sometimes you may not want to come out of the hypnotic state, because the relaxation feels so good! When that happens it may take you a few minutes to return to your normal awareness but that is only because you want to stay in the relaxed state. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis because you are the one in control of the process. Even if a session ends without official closure, you'll naturally come out of hypnosis on your own-- either popping out of hypnosis immediately or moving into a nap, and then waking up normally.

Do online hypnotherapy sessions really work?

Yes! Hypnotherapy is just as effective online as it is in person. In fact, many clients find it even more comfortable to do this inner work from the safety and privacy of their own space.

How long do the changes made during hypnotherapy last?

Some people experience a lifelong change after just one session while most people require multiple sessions.

What happens in the first session?

First, we will talk about the issue that concerns you. Then, if you are ready, I will help you enter a light to medium state of hypnosis and begin addressing your underlying concern.

What online/virtual platform do you use for sessions?

I use Zoom due to its reliability, ease of use, and security features like end-to-end encryption. I will email you with a Zoom link for our session together after you schedule your session.

What is Zoom and how do I join a Zoom meeting session?

Zoom is a simple and easy to use video communication platform that allows you to connect and meet other people online using a supported device such as your laptop computer or phone. It is a safe and secure platform that is well suited to online hypnotherapy. To join a Zoom meeting, go to your appointment email which will contain a unique link for your session. Find the Zoom meeting link and click it. Click "Allow" if you are prompted to by Zoom.

Do I need Zoom on my computer to join my Zoom meeting session?

You don't need a Zoom account to join meetings as a participant. When you receive your Zoom link, click on it about 5 minutes before the meeting is scheduled to start and I will admit you to the virtual "room" at the appointed time. However, downloading the Zoom app (available for free on computers, tablets, or smartphones) is recommended for a smoother experience with better audio and video quality. I can guide you on setup if needed.

Can I use Zoom on my phone or tablet for hypnotherapy?

Yes, Zoom works well on smartphones or tablets via the free Zoom app. Ensure your device is fully charged or plugged in, and use a stand or prop to keep it stable. Headphones with a microphone can improve audio clarity. A larger screen (like a laptop) might be more comfortable, but phones or tablets are perfectly suitable.

What do I need to prepare for a Zoom hypnotherapy session?

You’ll need: -a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed and where you can feel comfortable expressing strong emotions if they come up -a reliable, steady and strong internet connection -a fully charged device with a camera and microphone ( laptop, tablet, or smartphone). I recommend ear buds or headphones because they will enhance focus and audio clarity. Check that they are in working order before the session. -ensure that you’re seated comfortably at the start of the session. For the hypnosis a bit later on, you'll need to be reclined or lying down comfortably, with lighting that doesn't interfere with your relaxation -some people like to wear an eye mask

What if the wi-fi gets disconnected?

Before we begin the session, we will agree what to do to if we become disconnected. For example, if our connection is not automatically restored after a few minutes, we can continue the session via phone until internet connection is restored. If the challenges are insurmountable, we can schedule another appointment to finish the session (at no charge).

What should I do if I experience technical issues with Zoom during the session?

Test your internet, audio, and video before the session to minimize issues. If Zoom freezes or disconnects, you’ll naturally exit the hypnotic state, as it’s a relaxed but conscious state. We'll reconnect or reschedule via email or phone at no charge.
